Biography

Mike Frogley is highly regarded among the greatest wheelchair basketball minds in the world. He is a leader, a mentor, and an innovator who is actively involved in the development of the sport at all levels.

Frogley began playing basketball when he was 10 years old. He began playing on an asphalt court on a playground behind his middle school. He played through high school. He was the quintessential gym rat, being on the court first each day, the last to leave each night, playing for hours.

He was injured in a car accident in 1986 and was introduced to wheelchair basketball while at the rehabilitation centre in Ottawa. It took almost two years before Mike started playing wheelchair basketball. When he started, he went back to his starting point-the asphalt courts behind his old middle school and began practicing again. Shortly after starting to play again, he joined the Ottawa Royals program and began to learn the game from Reg McClellan.

He made Team Canada in 1989 and competed with the Canadian Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team at the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, where Canada placed fourth.

Frogley would later move behind the Canadian bench, starting as an assistant coach with the Canadian Women’s Team that won gold in Atlanta in the 1996 Paralympic Games. Following the Atlanta Games, Mike served as the head coach of the Men’s National Team from 1997-2004. He guided Team Canada to Paralympic supremacy for the first time in program history with back-to-back gold medals in 2000 and 2004, as well as a Paralympic silver medal in 2008.

Frogley also served as an assistant coach in 2006 as the Canadian men won their first World Championship title.

In 1993, Frogley returned to his alma mater to coach the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wheelchair basketball program. He went on to foster a legacy of excellence in men’s and women’s collegiate wheelchair basketball, both at Wisconsin-Whitewater and the University of Illinois, leading his teams to a combined 12 national championship titles.

With unwavering dedication and an unparalleled work ethic, Frogley is renowned for his desire to empower those around him to achieve their very best each and every day, both on and off the basketball court.
